For years and years our main crops have always been rape and wheat. Rape is harvested for rape seed oil which is used for cooking, whilst our wheat, if we are lucky enough and the quality is top notch can be used for flour and breadmaking. We usually sell our wheat to Heygate & Sons at Bugbrooke, which is great as we like to support local businesses. If the quality is not good enough then they can use it for animal feed. In 2010 we decided to give our fields a bit of a rest from rape and grow beans instead as a break crop. Again depending on quality, they can either be for human consumption or as protein for animal feed. Whilst beans may require minimal input the downside is that they are a very ugly crop that turn black and leggy in the last stages of their cycle. The growing of beans was short lived and served its purpose, we are back to rape, meaning that John is forever on pigeon patrol!!
